Native PTP (IEEE 1588) Support — ptp4l / phc2sys / PHC refclock integration via VyOS CLI
Open, LowPublic

Description

PTP is widely used for many customers (ISPs and mobile networks) and current markets to maintain time precision.

VyOS currently lacks native support for the Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588). As VyOS is widely deployed as an edge firewall, a core router, and a VPN device, the PTP absence creates a measurable compliance and operational gap.

We are requesting first-class PTP support integrated into the VyOS configuration framework, since the Linux building blocks are already present in VyOS's Debian base — linuxptp (ptp4l, phc2sys), Chrony PHC refclock support, and ptp_kvm kernel module support are all available.

Many Network vendors already have PTP included; this will be very beneficial for VyOS customers: https://linuxptp.nwtime.org/documentation/

It could be implemented Virtual (KVM / Proxmox / QEMU):
Support for the ptp_kvm paravirtual clock, exposing /dev/ptp0 as a PHC refclock source for Chrony, for example:

refclock PHC /dev/ptp0 poll 2 refid KVM prefer

Also Physical hardware:
Support for hardware NIC timestamping and PHC synchronisation using ptp4l and phc2sys from the linuxptp package, with the ability to subsequently serve NTP to downstream clients from a PTP-disciplined system clock.
Requested CLI coverage:

set service ptp
set service ntp refclock phc

For example, NVIDIA use PTP with linuxptp:

NVIDIA is also Debian-based.
